Plum Officials Take Stand Against Illegal Workers
(KDKA) PLUM BOROUGH Leaders in one local community say they are taking a stand against illegal workers.

Officials in Plum Borough have suspended the permits for subcontractors of Verizon until they can verify their workers are working legally in the United States.

“These illegals, they can’t be working for these companies,” Plum resident Ryan Campbell told KDKA. “This is jobs that Americans could be doing and it’s just ridiculous that they’re coming in hiring these illegals.”

Campbell says he saw a Verizon subcontractor driving a truck that slammed into a tree a few weeks ago. It turns out the driver was an illegal immigrant.

Police say the driver had a fake driver’s license and social security card. Campbell and others lobbied Plum’s council to pull 27 Verizon permits in the borough and they did. Additionally, all Verizon subcontractors will be checked out by Plum police.

“I’m very proud of what Plum did and I think other municipalities need to step up and do the same thing with these big companies,” Campbell said.

Until the employees are checked out, Verizon will not be permitted to continue work in the borough.

Verizon says it welcomes the actions of the Plum council and says it hopes the police check of all of its subcontractors will lift any cloud of suspicion.
