sounds wierd, but I had a car once that would shut down for no reason and i treated it as vapor lock for a year, then one day i noticed that when i was cranking it, the tach wouldn't move. After checking and tinkering, I found that the coil had a crack in it. when there was enough heat the crack would widen just enough to remove continuity, then when i had the hood up, it would cool down and the crack would close and the engine would run again...... talk about a hard to diagnose problem.
