I don't know the details of the story but I do know that right around that time that system changed to a filterless system (except for basic only). Before the change, premium channels such as HBO, SkinAMax, and such didn't require a digital box.
Who knows. Maybe he was pissed that he wasn't getting HBO, maybe the TV was set to antenna instead of cable or maybe his TV was broke (not to uncommon for the area).
Regardless, it's a shame that someone lost his life over it and it's a shame that he was making an illegal hook up in the first place.
