I would recommend getting the book "Modern Cable Television Technology" 2nd edition. Read chapter 13(PG585), it goes in depth on OMI.

Mi=26.5/square root of N
Mi -- is the maximum per-channel OMI percentage
N --is the number of equal power RF channels in the modulating spectrum
