It's common practice for an incoming president to fire the US Attorneys from the previous regime and hire his choices. GW did it, Clinton did it, Reagan did it. The issue here is that Gonzales, presumably under orders from the Bush admin, fired Attorneys Bush himself appointed because they wouldn't follow orders to either stop investigating Bush's friends or start bogus investigations of his enemies.
To put it in perspective, going back to the Carter admin only 5 US Attorneys were fired or even quit before their tenure was up. In each case there was a legitimate reason, either criminal or unethical conduct and whatnot. Gonzoles fired 8 attorneys at once. These people performed their jobs and had no criminal or ethical allegations against them. There's a coverup going on, millions of missing emails and Gonzoles just "can't recall" anything related to it.
This is all about political corruption and trying to destroy the checks and balances of the government. The Bush admin and CONservatives in general stink of corruption from Iraq, to gas prices, to Abramoff. We're just starting to see the slimmest cracks of truth since the turnover in Congress. Much more to come.
