It really depends on what your goals are. For the lions share of burger flippers in this game it would be meaningless and nearly impossible to successfully complete. The SCTE certification program is a good program if you plan to make this business a career. If you aspire to go on in to technical management in an in house capacity, certifications in the SCTE or NCTI carry a significant value on you resume.
Will it make you more productive in the field? Probably not. You'll find that by knowing in greater detail what is expected in terms of performing a top quality install, for instance will actually slow you down.
On the up side, if you do service calls you may find that some of what you will learn to be useful so that you are not out there just changing parts. You'll be able to more quickly diagnose a problem and not chase your tail looking for phantoms.
In my perspective, any time you can back your knowledge up with certification, it is a good thing.
