I've only had a few problems with incompatible machines but there are a couple fixes that have worked for me in the past.
1. if at all possible, use the phone cord that came with the fax machine.
2. if not available or still doesn't work, try making a cord but snipping off the yellow/black wires before putting the rj11 fitting on. That would mean you would only have the one pair cord instead of the two pair cord.
3. plugging into a jack instead of the EMTA is also a fix that has worked for me as well.
