Actually the free part won't help much but...........there are sales and installation personel that don't work for the cable companies. They collect cash on completion, there is no real QC issue but if you get caught at it the cable company will have you arrested.
Years ago I was doing authorized upgrades and disconnects for a cable company. I was up a pole disconnecting a line I could see going into an unoccupied second floor apartment. People in different buildings up and down the alley started shouting at me to cut their cable back on.
I also met a guy who did pretty well with door hangers. He would put out about a hundred a day early in the morning. If the door hanger disappeared he knew they were home and knocked on the door. He worked four hours a day every day. He could sell and install on the spot. previous credit disconnects were a problem for him, however. The cable co wouldn't pay for reconnecting deadbeats. But he did ok, he said.
