I almost ALWAYS use a spearzit. You cut your cutting surface down to 1/2" from about 5 or six inches. On top of that, I use Redrockers method. Drill, stop, push and drill again. In ten years of doing one type of installation or another (CATV, multi-single mode fiber, networking, telephony) I've only hit power once, because I had no other choice than to drill through the stud and there was no logical reason for the power wire to be where it was.
Now, I just plain don't drill through studs. Move whatever you need to get to, or don't get it. Company I now work for buys standard bits, but the extra safety is worth a few bucks out of pocket.
