The no-compete clause is legal. Many contracts contain such clauses, thats why one should READ the entire contract prior to signing it.
If you see a clause like that, tell them you do not agree and cross the clause out and have both parties initial it. If they refuse go someplace else to work or try to get away with signing a fake name on the contract, many times they don't even look closely at the signature. I know a guy who has signed contracts as Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham (the guy is a Led Zeppelin fanatic).
You have to remember, if you sign a contract without reading it, it's your fault that you signed something you don't agree with and really have no right to complain about it afterwards.
