Nope, just a strange server problem that I couldn't fix until recently.
What happened is the last time I upgraded the server hardware it stopped expiring an "active user" after 10 minutes as it should and instead would keep it for up to a few hours. That's why you'd see thousands in the list, it was over hours and not a short period.
I thought it might have been because the server software was upgraded at the same time, but after a few attempts trying to figure out what changed I gave up and just crossed out the "10 minutes" and put "while" in its place in the text.
It was that way for about a year, then over the holidays I built a new server and just moved the Bar over to it a couple days ago. The "active users" is back to working exactly as it should. Same web server software too, so I still don't know what it was. One of those FM things. Guess I can put the "10 minutes" back in the text now.
