Homeowners in a southern Ontario city are being warned that some recent cable installations might be hazardous.

Ontario's Electrical Safety Authority is investigating after a Rogers Cable technician created a danger of electrocution or fire in at least one cable panel in Waterloo.

The technician cut open insulation sheaths on cables outside a panel box, exposing conductors. If nicked, those conductors could shock a person or start a fire.

Ontario's Electrical Safety Authority and Rogers are concerned the technician may have performed other faulty installations that have yet to be found.

Over the coming weeks, Rogers will be asked to check every installation the technician completed. Investigators are unsure how long the technician performed installations or how many homes may be affected.

Ted Olechna of the province's Electrical Safety Authority told the Waterloo Region Record newspaper that residents who suspect a problem with their cable installation should not mess with it.

"Just leave it alone," he told the Record. "Don't touch it."
