Remember that your return path is low in frequincy, below ch 2. where your foward is usually above ch 70. The nature of rf signal is such that the higher the frequency,"channel" the more loss per 100 feet of cable. W/ this rule applied the drop does not effect the return loss as much as equipment does, I/E splitters taps and other non amplifieing equipment. If you do the math back to the first amp in line you should be seeing about 40 db on the return path. So if the modem can put out 58, subtract for the two way. thats 3.5 subtract for every tap in between the modem and the first amp and you will come up w/ a usable #. Most taps loose about a db in the return path. I would have to cunsolt a book to give you a more difinitive answer.
