Re: Are there any good companies left

never claimed to have all the answers. but i do post my thoughts. i'm glad you do the same. as for this back and forth about a week old thread i'll go ahead and speak the last of what i have to say.

the thread was about getting paid for sub-floor and attic crawls. several people me included made the point that it was just part of the job. someone else (maybe you) said something about some guy dying and went on to say that "i guess mso's and primes think that a subs life is worth $10 for the outlet" one point i'd like to make is how much should the crawl pay if it is life and death? i personally don't put a price on my life. it wouldn't be worth $1000 and i'm sure no one is paying that for a crawl so by your way of thinking no one should ever to crawl again. you went on to call people that do so hacks and suckers. i've never seen a contract where that was billable, so you just called every person i've ever worked with a hack and a sucker. i've worked with guys that just didn't quit getting jobs done with the highest quality and you insulted not just me but good friends who i have nothing but respect for. you went on to say that it took you 30 minutes (i'm assuming this is average) to get one line ($10) across an attic or under a floor. i can see why you are so upset. and yes i said if that's how long it took you, then you might be the hack and the sucker. the bottom line as i've said time after time during this exchange. if it is good for me then i do it. i take my safety as paramount and then i look at time and money. you can say i have a big ego and you may be right. but i've watched a lot of people come and go because they couldn't or wouldn't do the job correctly and/or with sufficient volume to waste quota on. i make a point not to be in that position. do i think the prices should be better, you bet. do i think that money should come from unenforceable, easily ghosted billing? absolutely not. that's the crap that got half the systems not paying for wallfishes. as for me moving between contracts, that is what a contractor is. someone that works when and where they want. if i wanted to go inhouse i have that opportunity at present, and someday i might do it, but right now i know that i can not settle for what that pays. i also cannot settle for small checks when i don't have to. i don't do my job for the sake of the industry, i do it for the sake of my family. i do quality work for the sake of the industry because that is good for me and thus my family. i bitch and i complain because there is a lot of bs on even the best contracts that i've worked on. talk about company owners all you want, but they always like me. despite the bitching. why? because i make them money. if i do a job they aren't going to get cussed by the plant manager or lose the money on a chargeback. do i have all the answers? no. but i play this game fairly well. will i be in this industry forever? who knows. if there was something better for me i'd do it. in the meantime i'm going to keep on doing my job, i'm going to call bs when i see it, and when i need to blow off steam i will probably vent on the bar.

if you have any questions then do it in a private message. this type of ignorant back and forth is tiresome on the bar and kills threads that might go somewhere productive.

ps this thread was started by someone blowing off steam on the bar. i believe it was bitching about all the bitching. get over it.
