IMO cable & sat MSOs have the ability to pay. What they dont have, is a reason to pay more. They have been blessed with a labor force that will install their product no matter the wages. In some cases the installer is paying the MSOs to install their product. Cable & sat MSOs are truly blessed. They totally have sold the idea "volume". Rate decrease + increase in volume = A damn good deal, is what they have made believable to many.
But the sat msos take it a step further and make you responsible for ANY reason a customer decides to discontinue the service. They actually take back what they have paid out and in essence have received free labor.
Why would the MSOs give this blessing up and start paying more? They would be crazy to give this up. They will not pay more unless the installer base gives them a reason to do so. Customer complaints wont change anything as long as everybody in the game is getting the same complaints. It keeps them all even. Outsourced CSRs and automated customer service systems are 2 very good examples. They both are hated by consumers but as long as all the companies use them the complaints will viewed by companies, as the norm
BTW, IMO a properly installed standard IRD using coax to the TV can stand tall against most CATV picture quality I have seen. But an IRD using s-video or AV jacks cant be touched by anything CATV has out there. Especially the audio.
