I don't care how long a job takes. Most cases a tech's writing his/her own check, and if they want to dog it and take a pay cut I'm not going to hassle them. By the 2nd week of working with them I know what they can handle.
There's a minimum standard before you get a company vehicle, but the techs who call at 9:30 AM to let me know why they won't be able to finish by 5:00 PM are NEVER going to be what I would consider a quality tech. The guy who begs for more work, runs around to his easy jobs that pay, calls with a "family emergency" at 2:00pm, then dumps the aos and evening calls on the rest on the guys. He's the jerk that makes you stay out late.
I trust people to do their job. If I get burned, so what- he's gone and the trainee gets his shot. My overhead is still smaller for it. And less F***ing phone calls.
