Maybe you should not correct someone if you cannot be correct yourself.
You should have said, "if I 'WERE' to point out......etc.; not, "if I 'WHERE' to point....! And, after "ethnics," there should have been a semi-colon since the next statement is a continuation of the original text or thought, "ethnics." The last statement was an incomplete sentence/statement that did not contain a subject and verb.
