Re: Info on Custom Work!!!

Here are some things to consider. Take a typical task and figure out what all the costs are. Let's look at the pole mount for an example:

Materials:
Pole- $8-15, maybe higher
Concrete $4 per 80#
Bolt <$1, for preventing twisting in ground

Total materials, about $20. Some people add a slight markup to the materials costs. If you are doing the shopping or ordering, I would say markup is reasonable.

Tools:

Shovel
Post-hole digger
limebuster bar
pickax
Sledgehammer
Post driver

These tools will not last forever, they will have to be replaced eventually. Figure out the lifespan of your tools and the cost of them. If a tool is $20 to replace and will last 20 custom jobs before needing replacement, then charge at least $1 for the tool usage. You could also add in a bit to make up for increasing costs. That $20 tool might go up in price if some metal market skyrockets.

The last thing to also consider is labor. Figure out what you want to be paid for just the labor if the customer were, to say, let you use a full range of tools and he provided all the parts.

Add labor, parts, and tools to come up with a price you are happy with.
