Not to be an ass but the traps, both "positive" and negative work on the same principle: they filter out a certain range of spectrum.
The "negative" traps work by simply eliminating XX.XX frequency. Install the trap, no more channel; remove it and you have the channel back. Very simple.
The "positive" traps don't really "add" channels; they work by filtering out the "scrambling" signal(s) that are "laid over" the desired channel. So, some systems require a "positive" trap to get certain premium channels. Install the trap and you can clearly see and hear the channel; remove it and you will get severe distortion resulting in an unwatchable channel.
I've simplified the particulars but I hope you get the concept of how the traps actually "work".
