Every suggestion I've seen here includes the use of labels and tags. Thieves will cut them off even if they don't have identification that appears to be of any use to them. Try this: Invisible Ink that glows under blacklight and buy a blacklight pen flashlight to see the markings. Write the markings directly on the wire. Use single or double digit alphanumeric symbols instead of apartment numbers. This way, if he does find it, he won't be able to decode it easily.

Also, you might try to get something with a blinking red light and put a label that says "Red light indicates transmitting of open lockbox". Put the blinking light inside the lockbox and wire it so that it comes on when the box is opened. This way, the thief will think that he has tripped an alarm. You can buy a simple electronic enclosure box from Radio Shack. Install a battery and a blinking light and a coax barrel to it. Then run a bogus cable from the tap/splitter to the enclosure. You can put a terminator on the barrel inside the enclosure to prevent signal leakage. The hood will think the alarm runs back through the system.
Also, another tactic you can do if the conditions are right, is to get a good puddle of water around the dirt at the lockbox location if it is in area where no regular foot traffic goes. Pour a ton of the ink from the above site into the puddle. The person who is breaking into your lockboxes will then spread the ink via their shoes back towards their apartment if they return home right after the theft. Come back at night with a blacklight and see if you can see the footprints. I don't know how well this works, but it might be worth a try.
