Re: SA II impulse noise (electrical interference)

Electrical, Impulse noise is usually a form of ingress, getting in through an imperfection in the shield of the cable system. Many of the sources of impulse noise are in the subscribers homes.

It is broad spectrum and pulses across the spectrum from about 100MHz down to 60 Hz. It does appear with standard spectrum analyzer setups to move through the bandwidth. This is really an optical illusion as the spectrum analyzer sweeps across the return spectrum. If you change the trigger setting on the analyser to "Line" it will freeze the pulses as they are usually a multiple of 60 Hz, the line trigger uses the 60 Hz of the ac power to the analyzer.

If you really feel the impulse noise is coming from the SAII amplifiers, they had a problem with the seize devices. There are different colours for the different current passing abilities, white, black and blue.

These amps may have seizure devices that are rated too low, and have experienced some arcing and thus impulse noise is created. Your SA representative should be able to come up with maintenance updates regarding this issue.
