Around here Comcast is devoting areas exclusively to one prime contractor, so one will have an area, say a couple of cities and the surrounding towns. My hometown used to have 4 major primes, now its down to one with the other 3 working for them. One set of trucks, less management, and Comcast gets writes one check instead of 4. Economy of scale. Good for business, bad fo me.
This keeps the prices low, because now there's reason to pay decent to keep the good help. The hacks always floated around, leaving and comming back, but paid more to keep quality help wiht them. Now there is no reason because there is no one else bidding for my labor, and prices drop.
But this eventually will give a union a chance, because if there is only one place to get an installer, the installer will end up back at the table, instead of eating what drops on the floor. It just sucks in the meantime.
