Re: $50,000 a year is NOT a good living!

No, do you think a tech's only hours are put in actually doing installs? No, their hours (hours which are often not put on time sheets) are put in while driving 180 miles (round trip) to pick up equipment or to attend a 10 minute manditory staff meeting (so the manager can remind everyone that it's hot during the summer, to drink lots of water and limit attic time to 15 minutes). Techs also put in a number of hours a week at home pre-calling customers, doing paperwork and figuring out the next days route.
Sure teacher work more than 8 hours in a day, but so do techs, only the techs do it all year long and 6 or 7 days a week whereas a teacher does it for 9-10 months a year 5 days a week. Also the teacher get a number of holidays off (two weeks at Christmas time, one or two weeks off for Spring Break, etc.), for the techs many of them have to work rotating holidays. Directv decided last year that installs and service calls needed to be available to the customer 364 days a year the only exception being Christmas Day, what's next? 24 hour a day installations and service? At the rate they are changing things I wouldn't rule it out.
