My point is DirecTV's recievers (all new ones ie DirecTV make) can operate fully without a land based phone line. No matter if it is a DVR, HD, etc..
The TiVo based HD DVR is the only exception. On this reciever, you must let it call out once to activate the dvr functions. After that smooth sailing. But as far as DirecTV's new reciever's, they work glitch free without a phone line.
I had a CSR try to tell me that the R15's dvr service wouldn't work without a phone line because the customer had only a cell phone. She was wrong. DVR's give quite a bit of the customers viewing information back to dtv who then sell it to marketing firms.
