Warren I will not be part of the action on May 1st. I dont support this cause 100%.
IMO this is a group that Big business and labor are both gambling on.
Big business thinks if they can get this group of workers legalized they will have a bigger and legal access to cheap labor. I think they want to get these workers legalized, they will then change their position and now support the people who are calling for a raise in min wage. They will probably support rasing min wage up to about $9-10/ hr (sounds good). BUT they will then offer all jobs at that min wage thinking the new workers will see it as a grand oppurtunity, and big business will paint themselves as the good guys because they helped lobby to almost double the min wage. I think they will try to paint themselves as the true pro worker people. They will make the claim that by rasing the min wage they have created better jobs for immigrants as well as the large percentage of Americans that were making less than $10/hr. Many people could fall for this nonsense.
Big labor on the other hand thinks that the resolve these workers are showing to get the laws passed is proof these worker are the kind of workers that wont hesitate to stand up againt their employers if they had the legal right to do so. The thinking is if they are smart enough to see that there is power in solidarity in regards to the goverment, they will have no problem understanding that solidarity is power in terms of the workplace, and are therefore good, no great, candidates for union membership. They feel these workers will be effective in keeping wages fair for workers. I starting to think they feel these workers may fight harder than American workers.
My opinion is that big labor and big business should be gambling on Americans, if theyre going to gamble on anybody. There are too many people out of work and under paid to support bringing in more people to the workforce, unionzed or not. I understand that the American worker has pretty much sits idle when it comes to labor issues. I understand big business wants access to people they feel they can get to work cheaper. But I just think the American worker should be getting all this attention. But because we sit idle all the time this is what we get. Were just sitting on the side lines as usual, being Monday morning quaterbacks....
