Re: A union, is it time

What a bunch of BS. This .org must be foreign. They show their ignorance of US labor laws or either they are flat out lying.

Collective bargaining agreement usually have no strike clauses. No strike clauses is an agreement that the union will not authourize any work stoppages during the life of an agreement. This is something unions agree to if the company agrees to a fair problm resolution process. The right to go to arbitration or have matters settled by a neutral third party is what unions usually want in order to agree to a no strike clause which the UAW has. This is labor law 101. So why this article says firing a lazy worker would cause a strike is a interesting. Working drunk is clearly a contracual grounds for firing (safety), and if by the SLIM chance this is not covered in th contract, its an OSHA violation as well.

He also says that companies cant bust unions. True. But employees can. If the relationship between the company and union was not serving the needs of the business, the employees could simply de-certify the union or agree to change things in the contract that would help better the company. With out the company there is no union. Union workers want and need the companies to be successful.

Lets just say everything this article says is true. What proof is there that GM would have made the right decisions. How do you know they would not have been a low paying company with high turn over. How do you know they would not have been another Enron or MCI. I watched AT&T pay 60 billion dollars for TCI and Media one. They then spent more billions investing in the plant. All this to sell it a few years later for about 20 billion. But I guess thats the unions fault also.
