Before prohibition, most of the internal combustion engines in the U.S. where powered by ethanol (corn alcohol). Taxes levied during prohibition made it so expensive to produce that farmers were forced to quit producing and using it and had to switch to petroleum based fuels. So we can actually blame the high gas prices on the supporters of prohibition. Most of who were religious fanatics and feminist extremists.
