Gas is expensive because there's more WORLDWIDE demand than supply. If we stop purchasing from one company (ExxonMobil) then the other companies will simply buy from ExxonMobil to meet their increased needs and -- TADA! -- pass the extra middleman costs on to the consumer.
What we need to do is face reality. We keep increasing our already huge demand while growing countries like China and India are greatly increasing theirs every year. Meanwhile, the world is producing as much oil as it possibly can and there are no significant new sources opening anywhere. Production is peaked.
There's really not much we as individuals can do about it but accept it. Pay the price or drive less. The problem calls for a sensible national energy policy, but with the Enron-first CONservatives in complete control of the government that isn't likely to happen.
