i guess if you are perfectly level then that would work although i've only done something similar on one occasion........14 floors up in a highrise and i wouldn't be able to swap lnb's without risking dropping it on one of 50 people on the street below, it did work, but not as quick as just being level and running the meter, it would definitely be a problem if you had a sketchy mount (rotten wall, roof etc.) where the weight of say a 1000 dish might pull you off level. as for the guy that's always done it this way, there is always someone that goes there own way and makes it work, i'd ask him whatever he knows about it, then buy a meter....if you can't afford $125 for a decent meter it's time to do something else.
