yes, i drill from the inside out, i use a rigid 18 volt hammer-drill and good masonary bits, i've never met brick i couldn't get through and in my opinion about 50% of the brick out there today is softer than the mortar. if you feel like playing a minute you can usually find the mortar joint by feel, but i don't bother as my drill and bits have yet to let me down, whether it be a cement block or brick that's been baking in the tx heat for 100 years (i'll take cement block anyday).
but honestly i'm not overly concerned about what i might hit if i drill from the outside in.... it's the ease of installation and the interior appearance that drives this decision.......if i drill from the inside i just line my bit up with the center of any other outlet on the wall and miraculously my faceplates are all lined up! i can only assume that when i see all the plates at 24" and a coax plate at the baseboard it is someone drilling from the outside.
