i am guessing since you said SSR trace you might be using a Trilithic 860DSP meter for injecting back your return? Granted you want this to be flat going back to the head-end receiver, but just like you forward when you sweep back on the return you need to lool out for your typical connector and cable issues, also diplex filters in your amps can affect your sweep trace.
Some older gear like Jerrold JLX line extenders had 30mhz return diplexer's that need upgrade along with the return EQ's themselves. So take your time and check the quick visuals items in your equipment.
