Cablevision Systems reported today that it's going to buck the rest of the cable industry by offering a digital video recorder that saves recorded programming at its headend, rather than on a hard drive inside the customer's set top converter.
Cablevision says this will reduce the installation and repair costs of current set-top DVRs.
In what will be a blow to hard drive and set top manufacturers, Cablevision's new DVR system will use existing two-way digital set top converters, rather than requiring the purchase and deployment of new converters.
Cablevision expects to launch its new DVR service later in 2006.
