You overcame your conviction by working hard to make a change in your life. If someone does run a background check on you they may have questions about your conviction and ask you about it, but with the nature of my friend's conviction they won't give him that chance.
I feel bad for him because I know he dedicates himself to whatever he does and that he would make a great satellite installer if he was given the chance. If I had a contract he'd be one of the first people I'd hire, no doubt about it.
