I tried to do this once. The biggest problem was the number of techs who were too damn complacent about fighting back, even right after a big paycut happened. As for how I would have done things differently, I would have retained a lawyer first and then gave his card to the office manager and told him exactly what I was trying to do. Now they can't claim they didn't know what you were up to and any termination would become suspect at that time. Make sure all your work is up to par and that there is no legitimate reason to can you. Don't talk about the company anywhere including public internet forums or to people you don't know.
I tried to unionize under the IBEW. Don't go with them. They were of no help whatsoever. Looking back, I would have gone with the TEAMSTERS. They are a bunch of a**holes but they will be all over the shop's management and pushing them around. The shop manager will feel all kinds of heat under his collar.
Lastly, expect to get fired for your actions. You would probably be much better off to simply find a job somewhere else where they take care of you and a place you don't think needs union protection for their employees. After I was fired, I went to a different company and they were so good to me that I could never imagine wanting to bring in a union there. It's too bad that they had a major slowdown and I had to move on.
Companies will try all sorts of union-busting tactics, but they always fail to realize that the best way to keep their business non-union is to take care of their employees.
