Re: D11

The problem of receivers blowing when plugged in or plugging in the coax started coming into play when they started putting the three prong plugs on the receivers. At the HSP I worked for they had some techs who blew as many as 4 receivers on one job trying to get one to work. The problem was a mis-wired GFI (ground fault interupt) outlet. Most people think it is a problem with the receiver because you can plug it in right next to another item that also has a three prong plug and the receiver will blow while the other item is unaffected. The reason for this is that the receiver is connected directly to a ground via the coax and the grounding block outside next to the meter base. The power is passing through the third prong of mis-wired GFI and is grounding out through the receiver's case, coax and grounding block. The electronics are the weakes point in that loop so they end up blowing. If this is happening then you can change out the receiver and plug it into the same outlet using a 2 prong adapter, thus taking the third (gounding) prong out of play. Checking the outlet with a polarity tester will help if the tester has the button for tripping GFI outlets. Keep in mind you don't have to plugged directly into the GFI outlet for it to cause a problem. If a mis-wired GFI is anywhere in the circuit it can cause a receiver to blow or other problems.
