There aren't many rungs left in that ladder

What kind of work are you doing?

Outside or inside tech?
Sub or employee?
install?, splice? sweep?

Your best bet is to find an old cable dawg who hasn't taken his hooks off yet. Get him drawling on about the glory days of stringing virgin towns, running street side strand for 20 hours a day.

He'll tell you about the cowboy days, make your head swim with stories of treasure and money made. To hear the Legend of Yore will let you know what a weak and hollow vessel we poor saps sail today.

Moving up the ladder is much harder now, simply because quite a few of the rungs are now missing. Outside plant (construction) is a shell of what it once was. There just isn't a need.

Don't limit yourself to cable and sat. certifications. After 8 years in the field I found there was a great big wide world out there that couldn't give a rat's ass about cable tv certifications.

If you're going to go back to school for a technical degree, get a license. Certifications are great for the employer, because they mean they don't have to train you, something they can brag about to an MSO

But when you have a license the are hiring you because they NEED you, which is a much stronger place to be when negotiating compensation.
