no phone lines on dish or direct unless it's dual?

i'm about to go from catv to sat and was told by the company that if a jack wasn't available i didn't need to do the phone......i have no idea where to get the info for what dish and dtv expect.....can someone tell me if this is legit or can i expect 2 weeks of chargebacks when i get a check if i don't run new phone lines when needed?
