Mike Evans

An electrician working on a pole light did not hesitate when he saw an automobile veer off Interstate 44 and plunge into a pond near Catoosa.

Mike Evans shed his hat, coat and watch and dived into the water.

He pulled Jack Bailey, 72, out of the car before it sank.

The Claremore man had suffered a seizure and his car slammed into the pond about 11:15 a.m. Monday near the Cherokee Casino, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported. Bailey was treated and released from a hospital.

Evans, 31, of Kellyville, said he is used to responding quickly in emergencies.

"I grew up naturally around that reaction," Evans said. "My dad was a firefighter for 12 years when I was growing up. Most men I look up to, that's what they would have done." (usa)
