If a meter is reported stolen to Acterna (Wavetek) they will do the repairs/calibration and bill the one who sent it in and return it to the rightful owner. Acterna would probably send an e-mail to either you or a perspective buyer as to the status of a meter as far as they know, other than police agencies this is the only way I know of to check whether or not it's hot.
