Re: A new career

I don’t know if I would call being an installer a career. It is almost a dead end job. I started four years ago and I am making the same amount of money I was making six months after I started. It’s not bad if you realize this going into it. If you start out making about $1,000 a week it is about as high as you are going to go. Not too many pay raises for installers. The companies are cutting rates most of the time. There are good weeks ($1,500) every so often and there are bad weeks ($600).

Just don’t get used to the good weeks because it will tear you up when you have a bad week. Before doing cable I was making $10 an hour and got my first check for $800 and didn’t know what to do. It is almost harder to have a budget now that I have more money then when I had less money. The main drawback is the unpredictability of the pay. I track my work orders on a spreadsheet everyday and am able to see how much money my check will be for. It is just hard when the money changes every week.
