Microsoft Worm destroying files?

Can someone please explain to me exactly what a person can do. From my understanding the worm invaded computers last month, but is set to "awaken" on Friday. It will wipe out all sorts of stored info. Is there anything a person can do if it is already in your computer? What about saving info to disk and then shutting computer down. I am no computer expert, and was hoping someone could shed a little light in "english". -Wife of Garrison
