I have only worked for 2 subs, but at both ends of the spectrum. One believed in taking care of the ones who took care of him. That seemed to work well from a tech standpoint, but he could not stand up to the pressures created when politics and dollars took over contract negotiations. My next job was with a larger company that had the financial backing to offer job security. They offered more benefits with a moderate pay scale. Both had trouble keeping good help. So the sorry techs were weeded out either way. But the good techs always had to carry the load either way. The only difference was that with the high paying sub., you could make a very respectable check for carrying the load. The money makes it a lot easier to work 60-80 hrs a week. Plus most wives don't fuss when they have plenty of money to spend. If you are broke they raise hell daily. There are a few subs out there that still believe in paying the tech good, because he or someone like him made the money in their pockets.
If money determines your decision, go small. If you have a family and need to be stable, go big or inhouse. Hopefully someone will figure out how to pay a salary based on revenue created. Then we can all have money and security. If you just need security, Wal-mart is always hiring. They won't be filing bankruptcy any time soon.
