The size of the city doesn't have very much, if any thing, to do with installer pay, although regional location does to a small extent. I have no idea how in house techs survive on what they make (they must have a significant other with a decent income).
As a contractor, you would have to decide if spending $200-300 a week or more on expenses to make $1000 (if your competent) for a net of $700 - $800 or less is good money, but the $ can vary up or down quite a bit from that amount. Additional schooling or certification is almost meaningless on the contracting side although it might mean something for a prospective in house (MSO) position. If you do ever decide to contract, watch out, there is more con artists in this business now then ever. Good luck!
