Im going to show my age here. They all started as AT&T. In 1984 the goverment ordered AT&T to split, it was called divesteture. The overment said AT&T had a monopoly on the phone business. It consisted of AT&T long distance, all the baby bells like Indiana BEll, Ohio Bell etc... which provided local service, and Western Electric which manufactured telecom euippment, everything from switches to telephones was made by Western Electric.
In 1984 the goverment ordered AT&T to divest. They could either keep Western Electric or the baby bells. They choose to keep Western Electric. So when they broke up the baby bells came together and formed Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOC)s SBC, Bell South, etc....
Western Electric then broke from AT&T in 1996 and changed their name to Lucent. The Business Communications part of lucent split and became Avaya.
