Consider a little history. As others have pointed out, unions address the concerns of employees to employers.
The fiction that large or diversified employers like to use is that everyone is a contractor. Be your own boss sounds good but consider what the term means. Accept or reject offers to bid on work. Look for contracts you can agree to perform with a profit.
Capital (or bosses) need to control costs. Big companies have always driven down prices for labor while driving up selling price of goods produced. If the process is fair to all only best goods at lowest POSSIBLE price will emerge.
Consider what that could mean.
