how much is to much cable in a dtv system

wanting to know how much cable can actually be used before you loose to much signal,a tech had a service call, calls me up hes been there 3 hours and cant figure it out, says there is aproximatly 300 ft from the dish to the ground block (basic dish) then about another 150ft in the rest of the system, two receiver in the basement(longest runs)only receive partial channels if he takes out the multi switch and goes direct they work replaced multiswitch still the problem he put up a multi sat and added two new lines and same problem, also tried to put a powerd 4x8 and still same problem so i told him to put in another basic dish and problem was solved this made no sense to me any ideas would appriciate it. by the way a total of 4 receivers in the system
