There is nothing you can do about this, because you agreed to it. It's definitely not against the law. You signed a contract that allows for liquidated damages in the event of non-performance. Happens every day. I've seen a lot worse, such as MILLIONS of dollars paid out for missed deadlines, even though missing the deadline had absolutely no effect on the project.

You're right, in that someone should put their foot down, but who's gonna do it? If everyone in the install business quit today, there would be a hack out there waiting to take their places.

I don't agree with what a lot of the big players are doing, but I've seen from both sides. An honest guy goes out and does an honest day's work and ends up screwed. A hack goes out and does sloppy work, somebody else gets screwed. It's the way it is.

So, asking the musical question: What are you going to do about it?
