Jace.
Jace,
Every state is different.
I am not a lawyer but here are a few things I have noticed or at least things you might look at.
1. Does your contract identify for whome you are doing the work?
2. Can you prove you did the work and was there an agreed upon
price?
3. Have you been paid anything? ...Is there still money in the account that paid you?
I have done many hand-shake deals and been fine. The ones that cost me were also verbal agreements but when I arrived to pick up a check and the office was empty...........I was where you are........looking around.
4. Once you get a judgement you still gotta find money or property to put a lien upon. If you get to the liern in hand stage it has to be recorded every so often.....you may be paid only when your guy tries to sell something you have the lien against.
5. Move fast to find the slow pay guy, get a lawyer---cheap--- and do as much research as you can. Expect to pay one third for collection...or add one third to the amount you sue for as collection costs........All states are different here. The law books are in the local public library in the referencew section for free.
Good luck,
Joe
