redrocker80 is mostly correct. Wicking of water, which will ruin the connection, is the issue.
Ingress is not likely, since one whisker of shield sticking out does not mean that there is an open hole for RF to get past the shield AND the braid to the inside of the cable. Someone said if the dielectric is exposed, you will get ingress. Right.
Your supervisor is not dealing with facts. He is dealing with what he has been taught to tell you and other installers, because if you follow what he says, and NEVER let a SINGLE whisker stick out, you will always make perfect connections and the cable system will perform correctly. He and his bosses are not in the position of taking the time to explain the theory and instruct you; they are in the position of getting perfect connections every time. IF they told you that a little whisker like that would cause one of your precious bodily appendages to shrink every time you made one, you would damn sure make good connections. They want good connections and don't care (probably) about the size of your appendages.
