There was the Lend Lease program that was enacted March 11, 1941 that was done in hope of providing the Brits with enough war supplies to defeat the Nazi's before we had to jump into the fray. But the ships that were torpedoed off our coast in the early months of 1942 were sank after the Germans declared war on the US (December 11, 1941). While prior to the war declaration there may have been a profit in supplying the Brit's war efforts, but afterwards the goal was more about defeating the enemy not making a buck or two. Besides that if you compare the amount of war supplies that ended up on the bottom of the amount which made to the warfront during those early months of 1942, you will see that the amounts are nearly equal. If you'd like more information on this subject I suggest reading Torpedo Junction by Homer Hickam. Also read Operation Drumbeat by Michael Gannon. Both books are very interesting.
